Hunter Biden is defending his upcoming LAPTOP memecoin after facing strong criticism from parts of the digital-asset community ahead of its launch. As part of his strategy to win over the crypto space, he has even disclosed plans to airdrop 20% of the token to the community, including those who lost money to the TRUMP token capitulation.
Biden Defends LAPTOP Launch
In a lengthy X post, Biden framed the token as an attempt to reclaim the laptop controversy that followed him for years. He said the name once used against him had become a symbol of resilience, redemption, and recovery.
Biden also aimed at Donald Trump’s TRUMP token, arguing that the project damaged confidence in memecoins. He cited figures suggesting that nearly one million wallets collectively lost about $3.8 billion through TRUMP.
Rather than presenting LAPTOP as a conventional financial opportunity, Biden said the token hinges on a broader political and cultural message. He also warned potential buyers not to expect him or other people involved with the project to increase its value.
LAPTOP Turns a Political Scandal Into a Token
Biden’s central argument is that the laptop controversy became a weapon used against him, while LAPTOP represents his attempt to take control of the narrative.
“For years, Trump and right-wing media have been asking, ‘Where’s Hunter?'” Biden wrote, before presenting himself as someone who had survived years of political and media scrutiny.
He described himself as sober and ready to speak publicly about his experiences. The token’s branding closely aligns with his personal story rather than being built solely around a conventional digital-asset concept.
Biden said 20% of LAPTOP’s supply will be distributed through community airdrops. That allocation will reportedly include people who lost money through the TRUMP token. Another 30% of the supply will go to a pre-programmed mechanism. The public will decide what happens to them in the future.
Biden also said an additional 50 million LAPTOP tokens will be donated to charity.
Biden Distances LAPTOP From a Traditional Memecoin Pitch
One of the most notable parts of Biden’s statement is his warning to buyers.
He explicitly said people should not expect him or anyone else associated with LAPTOP to make the token more valuable. Instead, he described the project as a form of expression, saying it is about “saying something” rather than simply owning an asset.
That distinction comes as the project faces skepticism before its launch.
Kraken previously removed a promotional post related to LAPTOP following criticism from users. Video journalist Andrew Callaghan also distanced himself from the project after his audience was reportedly included in a planned token distribution.
Base, the network where LAPTOP will launch, has also made clear that it is not a partner of the project. Base founder Jesse Pollak said the team had been approached but deliberately chose not to participate in designing or promoting the token.
The criticism highlights the unusual position LAPTOP took. Its appeal hinges on Hunter Biden’s personal history and the political controversy surrounding his laptop, while its launch is taking place in a market where politically themed tokens have already generated substantial debate.
Biden nevertheless appears determined to use that history rather than distance himself from it.
He argued that the laptop was once turned into a political weapon against him. His response is to transform the same symbol into the identity of a memecoin built around his own narrative.
